The Love Experiment

It’s been awhile since I’ve picked up a romance that’s more on the sweeter side. The Love Experiment by Harper Sinclair is a cute, innocent romance between two seemingly different people, both professionally and personally. Did it work out? I’m here to judge that.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Meet Jessa Marley. She’s spunky, intuitive, bubbly, the best listener you’ll ever meet, and she happens to be a matchmaker. While visiting a love convention where all the latest technology in dating apps is on display she bumps into a rather charismatic doctor of science. Dr. Spencer Holton is everything that Jessa Marley is not. He’s logical, analytical, and the developer of an algorithm for one of the world’s leading dating apps where he believes that science can predict your perfect love match.

Enter said “love experiment.” These two love the idea of challenging their positions on love. Jessa and Spencer agree to go on three dates set by each other using their own techniques and that’s where these two clashing personalities end up realizing they have more in common than what they thought.

The Love Experiment by Harper Sinclair

It makes for a great romantic plotline – one that’s been done quite often – but this one seems more refreshing. I think it’s because I haven’t seen it done in a setting that’s so on the nose about love. It’s evident from the very beginning that these two are destined for each other, but that’s not really what the book is about. That would be too predictable. In my opinion, this book is about the journey itself, about finding that someone and feeling that spark even if it takes awhile to realize it. It’s about finding each other and growing in a relationship.

I think the author did a beautiful job with this. The writing was eloquent and deliberate. I will say that while the writing itself was superb in describing the feelings of each character, I did notice that some of it seemed a little repetitive, like I had read the same sentence or a paragraph before. Nevertheless, it wasn’t too distracting from the story itself.

This is a very, very…very slow romance. You won’t see results until the end of the book. There’s a lot of second guessing between the characters that I knew I’d run into while reading which leads me to my next observation. For characters that are so open and honest with everyone around them, it was almost hard to believe that they wouldn’t be that way with each other, but I guess love makes you do and say things you normally wouldn’t.

These characters and the secondary ones were also almost too perfect for me. There wasn’t really a flaw in any of them that I could see except for maybe a little anxiety when they first started falling for each other. Not a vice in sight. I sometimes caught myself feeling like I was subpar to these characters because I couldn’t relate to the little struggle they had. I mean, if these people couldn’t find love, then the rest of us are doomed!

Overall, I liked the story for what it was, a simple romance. Would I say it was overtly exciting? Probably not, but it was easy to read and well written. And besides, who doesn’t like a happy ending?

If this sounds like a sweet romance you can get into, I suggest to check it out. If you do, don’t forget to leave the author with an honest review. My cup of tea is different from others. You might be pleasantly surprised. Happy reading!
