The Scent of a Man by Veralyn Keach was recommended to me during a writer’s lift on Twitter. I try to read books that I wouldn’t normally read to give a variety of reviews and content. This was a paranormal romance that was eerily similar to the plot of Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. Here’s my honest review.
Let me preface this by saying that my review isn’t meant to deter any potential readers, because I believe everyone should form their own opinions. However, I will say that the more I read this short, erotic novella it brought up old memories of my teenage days waiting for the new Twilight book to hit shelves.
The author has drawn heavily from the plot line of Breaking Dawn and incorporated it here. It was almost like I was reading the same story just shortened to the main plotline with different character names. Ariel Landford is set to marry her fiancé at the beginning of the book until she’s spotted by Damien, a charismatic vampire/human hybrid. Her life is derailed when Damien compels her fiancé to leave her so that Damien can take her as his bride.
Damien wants a little bit more from her than that, though. He also wants her to carry his child. Some of you may be wondering where the romance comes into this? Well, the author portrays Damien as hard to resist and Ariel is a pliable character, often giving into his whims. She agrees to his terms and seems happy with her decision because their attraction for each other is non-deniable.
This was a light and fluffy read. It’s fast-paced and it won’t take long to get to the steamy bits if that’s what you’re into. It’s written more like a fanfiction than a novel and has other stories in the series. Some of the wording and sentences are repetitive but if you can look past that, then you may enjoy this story.
While I’m down for a short, simple, and sweet erotic story, this one was a little too fast in my opinion. I also think the author could’ve made the erotic scene a little more spicy, but to each their own. I believe more interactions with Damien and Ariel could’ve made the story more interesting before the introduction of a child after their single love-making session. If anything, I had fun reading it and picking out all the references to Breaking Dawn.
If you want to check out the book or support the author, know this book is available on Kindle Unlimited in addition to purchases. They also have other books available. Happy reading!
